A legacy web browser from Microsoft, discontinued in favor of a new version built on Chromium.
Microsoft Edge Legacy is a discontinued web browser that was originally developed by Microsoft as the default browser for the Windows 10 operating system. First released in 2015, Edge Legacy used Microsoft's own EdgeHTML rendering engine and Chakra JavaScript engine.
In the first few years after its launch, Edge Legacy struggled to gain significant market share against competitors like Chrome and Firefox. As a result, in 2018 Microsoft announced plans to rebuild Edge on top of the open source Chromium project - the same framework used by Google Chrome. This new version, now just called Microsoft Edge, was released in 2020.
Since then, Microsoft has ended development on the original Edge Legacy browser. As of mid-2022, Edge Legacy has been removed from Windows 10 and 11, with the Chromium-based Edge becoming the new default browser. Some enterprise customers may still use Edge Legacy, but for most consumers the browser is now discontinued in favor of the new Microsoft Edge.
Key features of the now discontinued Edge Legacy browser included integration with Windows 10, support for extensions, digital ink annotation capabilities, and reading mode. But the browser was criticized for compatibility issues with some websites and lack of extension support compared to established browsers like Chrome.
