Learn more about MobileMe, a discontinued Apple service offering cloud syncing for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Macs, with features like contact, calendar, and bookmark synchronization.
MobileMe was a subscription-based suite of online services and software offered by Apple Inc. It was launched on July 11, 2008 as a rebrand and major upgrade to .Mac, Apple's previous online services suite.
MobileMe provided online services for Mac OS X and iOS users, including email and personal domains, calendars and contacts, bookmark, photo, and file syncing capabilities across multiple devices such as iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Mac computers. It worked by synchronizing data across these devices and Apple's cloud storage servers over the internet.
Key features of MobileMe included:
MobileMe was intended to compete with online synchronization services like Microsoft OneDrive and Google Sync. It allowed users to access and edit files from any internet-connected computer as well as on iOS devices. However it often suffered criticism for its high subscription prices and occasionally spotty reliability and sync issues.
In June 2011 Apple announced that MobileMe would be discontinued as of June 30 2012, to be replaced by the new iCloud service. Existing users were offered one free year of iCloud storage equivalency. On September 30, 2012, the MobileMe services closed down entirely. Some but not all MobileMe services and features were moved over and preserved in iCloud.
