What is Monkey Island (Series)?

The Monkey Island series is a beloved franchise of comic point-and-click adventure games developed and published by LucasArts in the early 1990s. Created by Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman, the games center around the comedic misadventures of Guybrush Threepwood, a likable but clumsy would-be pirate who dreams of uncovering hidden treasure and becoming a fearsome buccaneer.

The first game in the series, The Secret of Monkey Island, was released in 1990 and follows Guybrush as he explores Mêlée IslandTM and attempts to complete a series of bizarre tasks to prove himself worthy of joining the local band of pirates. Along the way he crosses paths with the ghosts of deceased pirates, tribal cannibals guarding a historical amusement park, and the mysterious governor Elaine Marley.

The Monkey Island games are beloved for their humor, engaging stories and characters, clever puzzles, and distinctive visual style. Later games such as Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge and The Curse of Monkey Island expanded on the lore of the series and continued Guybrush's misadventures across a variety of colorful Caribbean locales. The franchise inspired numerous remakes and rereleases over the years, retaining a loyal fanbase to this day.
