What is Naemon?
Naemon is an open source computer system and network monitoring software application. It was forked from the popular Nagios monitoring tool in 2013 and aims to improve on some areas where Nagios was felt to be lacking.
Like Nagios, Naemon provides monitoring of network services, servers, and applications. It can notify users when things go wrong and provide reports on utilization trends and logged events. Some key features include:
- Monitoring network services like SMTP, POP3, HTTP, NNTP, ICMP, SNMP, FTP, and more.
- Monitoring host resources such as processor load, disk usage, system logs etc.
- Simple plugin design for developing custom service checks.
- Support for alert notifications via email, SMS or other systems.
- Web interface for viewing current network status, notifications and reports.
- Supports scalability for large network environments.
- Role-based access control.
- Modern web framework and UI improvements.
Naemon retains compatibility with the Nagios platform while aiming to improve areas like the UI, web interface and APIs. It is free and open source software released under the GPL license.
