What is NewsGuard?

NewsGuard is a browser extension available for major web browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari. It provides ratings and evaluations of news and information websites based on nine criteria of credibility and transparency.

When visiting a website, NewsGuard displays an icon and label in the browser toolbar indicating the site's rating on a scale from green to red. Green icons are given to sites that meet NewsGuard's standards for credibility and transparency. Red icons indicate sites that fall short of standards.

Users can click the icon to view a detailed "nutrition label" with a breakdown of each site's performance on factors like not repeatedly publishing false content, regularly issuing corrections, clearly distinguishing news from opinion, avoiding deceptive headlines and more. This allows readers to quickly assess the credibility of news sites.

The goal of NewsGuard is to fight false information and misinformation online by providing easy-to-access ratings so readers know which sites they can trust. NewsGuard uses trained analysts to manually review sites against its criteria, with a focus on sites that account for significant engagement and traffic in news.
