OpenSnitch: Open Source Application Firewall

Monitor and control network connections to protect against unwanted access and data leakage, with a user-friendly interface

What is OpenSnitch?

OpenSnitch is an open source application firewall for GNU/Linux systems. It allows users to monitor and control network connections to protect against unwanted access and data leakage.

OpenSnitch works by intercepting system calls and prompting the user to allow or deny connections initiated by applications on their device. When an app attempts to establish a new connection, OpenSnitch shows a pop-up notification with details about the attempted connection, including the originating app, destination IP address and port. Users can then choose whether to allow or deny that specific connection.

Key features of OpenSnitch include:

  • Monitors inbound and outbound network connections in real-time
  • Provides interactive pop-up prompts for users to allow or deny connections
  • Shows details about each connection attempt including process name, IP addresses/ports etc.
  • Maintains network connection logs for auditing and troubleshooting
  • Open source software, available for GNU/Linux operating systems

OpenSnitch aims to give users greater awareness, visibility and control over app network traffic on their devices. Its interactive prompts allow users to easily block unwanted connections and stop data leakage caused by malicious or improperly configured apps.
