What is Opera Unite?

Opera Unite was a feature included in older versions of the Opera web browser that enabled users to turn their computer into a simple web server. It allowed sharing of files, photos, media, and webpages with other Opera users, without having to set up a traditional web hosting account.

Some key capabilities and features of Opera Unite included:

• Easy way for novice users to share content online
• Built-in chat, photo sharing, file sharing and web page hosting
• Peer-to-peer connections for sharing content directly between users
• Did not require setting up port forwarding or dealing with IP addresses
• Encrypted connections for security
• Integrated directly into the Opera browser UI

Opera Unite aimed to make casual file and content sharing much simpler for end users. However, it had some limitations around scale and capabilities compared to full-featured web hosting platforms. Opera discontinued the Unite service in 2013 citing lack of user adoption. Some of the peer-to-peer and collaborative concepts pioneered in Opera Unite later evolved into features like WebRTC data channels.
