Optimism is a scaling solution for Ethereum that uses optimistic rollups to batch transactions off-chain, reducing costs and improving scalability. It enables fast, cheap transactions while leveraging the security of the Ethereum blockchain.
Optimism is a Layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum that aims to improve transaction speeds and reduce costs by processing transactions off the main Ethereum blockchain while still benefiting from its security. It uses a technique called optimistic rollups, which batches hundreds of transactions together and executes them on a separate Optimistic Virtual Machine (OVM).
Here's how it works: transactions are submitted to the OVM, which runs the transactions in parallel to the main Ethereum network. The OVM produces a succinct proof of the validity of the batch that is passed back to the main chain. This allows transactions to be processed very quickly and cheaply on Optimism while still settling on Ethereum.
The key innovation that enables the speed and cost improvements is the concept of optimistic assumptions - the OVM assumes all transactions are valid. Special network participants called challengers can dispute any invalid transactions they detect by initiating a fraud proof on mainnet.
By outsourcing computation and using fraud proofs, Optimism is able to significantly improve scalability. It reduces gas costs by over 100x while enabling throughputs of up to 2,000 transactions per second. Leading DeFi projects like Synthetix and Uniswap have already deployed on Optimism.
