What is PaperRater?

PaperRater is an automated proofreading and editing tool designed to help writers improve their writing. It was founded in 2008 by developers Matthew and Elizabeth Mulford and acquired by Literably in 2018.

PaperRater uses artificial intelligence to scan documents for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and style issues. It highlights potential problems and provides suggestions for corrections. Users can upload documents or copy and paste text into the PaperRater editor.

In addition to proofreading, PaperRater checks for accidental plagiarism using its Turnitin-based plagiarism detection engine. It compares submissions against its extensive database of internet content as well as published works and academic databases.

PaperRater generates annotated copies of documents showing all identified writing issues. It also produces overall readability and grade level scores using established readability formulas. An overall quality score is assigned based on the number and types of issues found.

PaperRater has both free and premium subscription options. Free users can submit up to 5 pages per month and access basic proofreading and plagiarism checking. Premium subscriptions provide unlimited checking, advanced grammar analysis, vocabulary enhancement suggestions, removal of PaperRater branding, and additional features.
