POV-Ray (the Persistence of Vision Raytracer) is a high-quality, free, and open-source ray tracing program for creating photo-realistic 3D graphics. It has been under active development since the late 1980s.
POV-Ray works by tracing the paths of light rays through a scene, simulating the physical behavior of light and its interactions with objects. It can produce stunning photorealistic images and is capable of advanced optical effects like reflection, refraction, and radiosity lighting simulations.
As a ray tracing renderer, POV-Ray produces images of much higher realism than real-time 3D graphics or scanline renderers. It excels at creating images of glass, water, mirrors, shadows, and light effects that would be very difficult to model correctly in other 3D programs.
POV-Ray has an extensive built-in scene description language that gives users precise control over the colors, textures, lighting, and geometry in a scene. A wide variety of free third-party models and textures are available for use in POV-Ray scenes.
While POV-Ray lacks advanced CAD modeling tools, it can import and render Geometry data from many 3D modeling applications via standardized file formats like OBJ and Mesh files. This makes it highly compatible with most 3D animation pipelines.
