What is Reactable?

Reactable is an innovative electronic musical instrument and performance device. It consists of a round translucent table surface on which users can place and manipulate various physical objects that represent components like oscillators, filters, and controllers. By moving these objects around on the table, users can create complex synthesizer patches and manipulate them in real-time to generate music.

What sets Reactable apart is its collaborative nature and intuitive, hands-on interface. Multiple performers can gather around the table, each grabbing, connecting, and controlling different parts of the synthesized whole. This facilitates an organic style of music-making, with sounds and rhythms developing almost spontaneously through the interactions of the various performers. Under the hood, the positions and orientations of the physical objects on the table are tracked by a computer vision system. This tracking data is then converted by the Reactable system software into manipulation of a modular synthesizer, with different objects controlling various parameters like waveform, filter cutoff, effect sends, etc based on their position and rotation. Performers can thus create rich textures of sound through simple physical interactions with tangible objects on the table, rather than having to manipulate traditional musical instrument interfaces.
