Cooperative roguelike third-person shooter platformer with procedurally generated levels, defeat monsters and collect items to improve chances of survival
Risk of Rain is a roguelike third-person shooter platformer video game developed by Hopoo Games. The game supports up to four player cooperative multiplayer as players attempt to survive across procedurally generated levels by defeating monsters and collecting items and loot to improve their chances.
Gameplay consists of battling waves of enemies as players race against the clock in an attempt to defeat the final boss. Players choose from several classes, each with their own abilities and skills to fight enemies and traverse the environment. As players progress, they collect items that modify stats and grant additional abilities. The difficulty scales drastically the longer players take, adding tension and challenge.
Risk of Rain encourages repeat playthroughs with its broad variety of items and randomly generated levels. No two playthroughs are ever quite the same. Since its release in 2013, the game has received positive reviews for its polished pixel graphics, chaotic action, and addictive progression system.
An expanded sequel called Risk of Rain 2 was released in 2020, transitioning the 2D side-scrolling gameplay of the original into full 3D across procedurally generated 3D worlds. With continued support from the developers, both Risk of Rain games have cultivated dedicated fanbases within the indie game community.
