What is Rogue Legacy?

Rogue Legacy is a roguelike platform game developed by Canadian indie studio Cellar Door Games. It was released in 2013 for Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and iOS.

In Rogue Legacy, players control a series of adventurers venturing into a randomly generated dungeon to defeat monsters and collect treasure. Each adventurer belongs to a lineage, and when they die, the player must choose an heir to continue the adventure. The heirs have various randomized traits such as nearsightedness, dwarfism, gigantism, and more that affect their gameplay style.

The dungeon in Rogue Legacy is procedurally generated, meaning the layout changes every time the player enters. It is filled with monsters, traps, and secrets to discover. Defeating enemies earns gold which can be used to upgrade the player's manor, giving heirs better equipment and abilities for future runs. There are several boss battles interspersed through the dungeon as well.

A key feature of Rogue Legacy is its genealogical gameplay - while individual characters die frequently, the player's lineage continues upgrading across generations. By managing gold, unlocks, and heirs carefully, players gradually power up over many short runs. The randomized traits also provide Novelty and challenge run to run.

Rogue Legacy received praise from critics for its clever mix of platforming gameplay and roguelike elements. Its genealogical systems and random traits added innovation to the genres. It was a financial success and sold over 1.5 million copies by 2016.
