What is Rthm?

Rthm is an open-source, cross-platform digital audio workstation (DAW) and music notation software. Developed as a free alternative to premium DAWs like Ableton Live and Logic Pro, Rthm provides tools for audio recording, MIDI sequencing, virtual instrument playback, effect processing, musical score editing, and music production.

As a DAW, Rthm allows users to record both digital audio from microphones and virtual instruments, as well as import existing audio files. An intuitive multitrack editor enables audio clipping, timestretching, pitch shifting, and applying real-time effects. MIDI can be entered via piano roll or notation editor, played via USB MIDI keyboard, or imported from existing MIDI files. A library of high-quality instrument and effect plugins for shaping sound are included.

Rthm also functions as notation software for writing musical scores. The notation editor supports standard music symbols and chord charts. Scores can be exported to PDF or MusicXML formats for sharing or opened side-by-side with the multitrack editor for scoring to picture. Useful tools like MIDI input, audio-to-MIDI conversion, and score scanning aid composition.

An extensible, modular interface allows customizing the layout. Rthm supports third-party VST and AU plugins. Active development ensures continued new features and bug fixes. With fully non-destructive editing, unlimited tracks, and cross-platform capability out of the box, Rthm provides an attractive free DAW option.
