Ebooks: Volunteer-Driven Public Domain Texts

Discover free, carefully formatted ebooks from public domain texts, all part of the volunteer-driven Standard Ebooks project

What is Standard Ebooks?

Standard Ebooks is a volunteer driven, not-for-profit project that produces high quality ebook editions of public domain texts. The project started in 2017 with the goal of producing properly formatted, consistently styled, and well-designed ebooks to improve readability and access to classic literature.

Standard Ebooks focuses on public domain works that can be legally distributed without restrictions. The volunteers carefully edit the source texts, correct errors, update antiquated spelling, and format everything using their own open source tools to convert the texts into clean EPUB files. The EPUB files can then be easily converted into other ebook formats like MOBI for Kindle.

Some key features of Standard Ebooks editions:

  • Professionally designed covers
  • Custom CSS for improved typography and readability
  • Proper formatting with chapter/section breaks
  • High quality images and illustrations when available
  • Accessible for screen readers
  • Available in EPUB, AZW3, PDF and more formats

By focusing on public domain texts without copyright restrictions, Standard Ebooks is able to distribute classic literature as free ebooks that anyone can share and enjoy.
