What is Streamripper?
Streamripper is an open-source command-line software application used to record audio streams from internet sources like online radio stations, podcasts, and other streaming media. It was originally developed in 2002 for Linux but now runs on various platforms including Windows and macOS.
The software works by connecting to an audio stream such as an MP3 or Ogg Vorbis stream, capturing the stream data in real-time, and splitting it into separate tracks based on cues in the stream's metadata or periods of silence. The tracks can then be encoded into files and saved locally.
Some key features of Streamripper include:
- Ability to record Shoutcast, Icecast and some other streaming protocols
- Automatically splits streams into separate tracks using metadata or silence detection
- Supports recording to different file formats like MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, WAV
- Can record from multiple streams simultaneously
- Schedule recordings for radio shows or podcasts
Streamripper is a lightweight, customizable tool useful for archiving online music streams and shows. It works best for recording from streams that have track metadata enabled for proper splitting. The source code and binaries are available for free under the GPLv2 license.
