Trine (Series): Colorful Fantasy Puzzle Platformer
A series of side-scrolling puzzle platformer video games with a focus on physics-based puzzles, developed by Frozenbyte, following the adventures of three heroes in colorful fantasy worlds.
What is Trine (Series)?
Trine is a popular indie game series of puzzle platformers developed and published by the Finnish studio Frozenbyte. The first game in the series, simply titled Trine, was released in 2009 and subsequently expanded and re-released as Trine: Enchanted Edition in 2014.
The series centers on a trio of heroes - Zoya the Thief, Pontius the Knight, and Amadeus the Wizard - who discover they are bound together by an ancient artifact called the Trine. They must use their unique abilities to solve physics-based puzzles and navigate challenging fantasy environments across the games' colorful side-scrolling levels.
Zoya utilizes a grappling rope and bow & arrows to traverse terrain and interact at range, Pontius has melee combat prowess and defensive skills with his shield and sword, while Amadeus can conjure objects like planks and boxes to help the heroes overcome obstacles or reach higher ground.
The Trine series features accessible, family-friendly gameplay with scenarios inspired by fairy tales and ancient myths. The visuals are characterized by vibrant, eye-catching graphics using the proprietary Frozenbyte game engine. The audio incorporates lush, immersive soundscapes to complement the fantasy settings.
After the success of the first installment, Trine 2 was released in 2011 and a third major entry in the series titled Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power was launched in 2015. The series has received generally positive critical reviews, especially praising the physics systems, level design, visual style, and accessible approach to the puzzle platforming genre.
