Xenonauts is a series of turn-based science fiction strategy video games developed and published independently by Goldhawk Interactive. Inspired by the original X-COM games from the 1990s, the Xenonauts games task players with defending Earth from alien invaders using tactical combat and global strategy.
The first game in the series, Xenonauts, was released in 2014 after a successful Kickstarter campaign. It serves as a spiritual successor to 1994's UFO: Enemy Unknown (X-COM: UFO Defense). Players must manage the Xenonauts organization and expand their base of operations while researching alien technologies and shooting down UFOs. Ground battles feature soldiers with role-based classes that can gain experience and rank up. The game received positive reviews for recapturing the challenge and depth of the early X-COM titles.
A sequel called Xenonauts 2 entered early access in 2021 with new features like 3D graphics, a reactive world map, soldier personalities and backgrounds. It aims to build on the foundation of the original while modernizing certain gameplay elements. Multiple soldier squads are deployed at once and the player has even greater control over base building and recruitment. Xenonauts 2 represents a more ambitious take on the invader defense formula the series is known for.
