What is 1Channel?

1Channel is a website that provides links to stream TV shows and movies from third-party hosting sites. It does not host any content itself, but rather scrapes the web to find video content hosted on sites like YouTube, DailyMotion, Vimeo, etc. and aggregates the links into a searchable index.

Users can search for titles and find streams of the video content to watch instantly. However, since 1Channel relies on external hosts, the availability of streams depends on those third-parties. Streams often get removed due to copyright issues.

1Channel rode a fine line of legality for many years until the site was shut down in 2018. At its peak, it was massively popular as a sort of pirate streaming site indexer before the days of Netflix and Hulu dominance. The site has since returned under new domains but faces the same threats of shut down.

As an alternative, services like Plex offer some similar aggregation and streaming capabilities but focus on content that users own or is part of a subscription service. Fully above board solutions lack some convenience but compensate in reliability and playback quality.
