What is Avernum (Series)?

Avernum is a series of single-player fantasy role-playing video games developed by Spiderweb Software. The games take place in the fictional world of Avernum, which is the subterranean world underneath the surface world of Exile. The Avernum games are known for their open-ended gameplay, allowing the player to explore the expansive world and complete quests in a non-linear order.

The first three games in the series (later released as the Avernum Trilogy) were originally named Exile I, Exile II and Exile III. These games followed the protagonist being exiled to Avernum for crimes against the Empire. The next three games kept the Avernum title and take place in the same world with a new slate of protagonists. The latest three games make up the Avernum: Escape from the Pit series.

Gameplay in Avernum focuses heavily on dungeon crawling and exploration, with turn-based combat against the many denizens of the subterranean world. Hundreds of quests are available across multiple towns and settlements. The game has a vast world filled with additional encounters and treasures for the ambitious adventurer.
