What is DNSCrypt Proxy Client?

DNSCrypt Proxy Client is an open source client software application developed for Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, and iOS that encrypts Domain Name System (DNS) traffic between a user's device and a DNS resolver. It helps prevent DNS spoofing, surveillance, and censorship by routing DNS queries through the DNSCrypt protocol to a remote DNS resolver that supports DNS traffic encryption.

The software routes regular, unencrypted DNS queries originating from applications on a user's device to a local DNSCrypt proxy client installed on their device. This client then encrypts the DNS queries using high-security cryptographic standards and forwards them over a secure channel to an upstream DNS resolver that supports DNSCrypt. The encrypted queries are decrypted by the upstream resolver which then performs the DNS lookup and returns the response encrypted back to the DNSCrypt proxy client on the user's device. The client finally decrypts the response so that the querying application receives clear and readable DNS data.

By encrypting the last mile of DNS traffic between a user's device and upstream resolver, DNSCrypt prevents third-parties such as ISPs, attackers, or government agencies from monitoring or modifying DNS queries and responses. This protects a user's privacy and improves security against threats like DNS hijacking and DNS spoofing. The proxy client and resolver are based on open protocols and open-source code without backdoors. DNSCrypt software is available for many platforms and is easy to install and use with little or no configuration.
