What is Endless Space?

Endless Space is a turn-based 4X (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate) space strategy video game developed and published by Amplitude Studios in 2012. It takes place in a science fiction space opera setting across multiple star systems that players can explore and conquer.

In Endless Space, the player takes control of one of several unique races, each with their own histories, technologies, and playstyles. Races include the peaceful Traders, the psychic Hissho, and the Vaulters who boast superior portal technology for transportation. The player manages their empire turn-by-turn to explore new star systems, colonize habitable planets, research new technologies, manage planetary economies, and command a space navy and ground troops in order to conquer opponents.

Matches take place on procedurally-generated maps that can contain hundreds of stars and planets to discover and utilize. Players must balance exploration, expansion, exploitation of resources, and extermination of their foes. The game features beautiful 3D graphics with intricate ship designs and space anomalies like black holes and wormholes. The galaxy is also filled with Minor Factions that can be influenced or assimilated. There is an overarching story campaign for each race that helps provide context and long-term goals.

Endless Space received positive reviews upon its release, with praise directed at the strategic depth, visual style, lore and races. It has since expanded with DLC adding new races, features and improvements. With challenging AI opponents, a compelling sci-fi universe to immerse into, and almost endless possibilities each playthrough, Endless Space is regarded as one of the best turn-based 4X strategy games in the space opera genre.
