What is Every Noise at Once?
Every Noise at Once is an interactive website developed by Glenn McDonald that allows you to explore and discover new genres and subgenres of music. It visualizes music genres as an interactive map, with over 1,500 genres and subgenres that you can click on to listen to musical examples.
The main feature of the site is the genre map, which displays genres as colored bubbles of various sizes. The size of each bubble corresponds to the popularity and size of each genre. You can zoom into specific genres to see smaller subgenres. Clicking on any bubble will play a song example from that genre.
As you zoom in and out and explore the map, you can discover musical styles you may not have heard of before. You can also search for genres and subgenres by name. When you click on a genre, it will highlight other similar genres on the map to help you explore related styles of music.
In the sidebar, you can see a list of the current genre you have selected along with its parent genres and child subgenres. This allows you to understand how genres are related and trace back through genre ancestry.
Every Noise at Once uses data on music's sonic and cultural qualities to categorize songs and genres. So besides discovering new genres, it can teach you about how different music styles are connected by their musical characteristics.
