Join a grassroots movement of individuals giving and receiving free items, from furniture to bikes, in your local town
Freecycle is an online movement that promotes reuse and keeping usable items out of landfills. It connects people who have things they want to get rid of with others who can use them. Freecycle groups exist in over 5,000 communities spread across 6 continents.
Freecycle works through local email lists. People post offers of items they want to give away, such as furniture, appliances, clothing, building materials, toys, plants, artwork, cars – you name it. Others in the community can respond if they are interested in taking the item. Everything posted must be legal and appropriate for all ages.
Once something is offered, it's first come, first served. There is no charge for anything traded on Freecycle – everything is free. Members are encouraged to think about the most sustainable option for items they no longer need. The goal is to reduce waste by connecting usable things with people who can use them rather than sending them to landfills.
Beyond simply a platform for getting free stuff, many Freecycle members appreciate the community and environmental values of the movement. It provides a way to give items new life with someone who needs them rather than throwing them away. This stops usable goods from clogging up landfills and saves members money in the process.
