Free and open source first-person shooter video game with free or open source assets, allowing legal distribution.
Freedoom is a free and open-source first-person shooter video game first released in 2014. It resembles the classic Id Software games Doom and Doom II, but unlike those games it does not contain any copyrighted data assets.
Instead, Freedoom uses free/libre assets made by fans and volunteers. This allows the game to be distributed freely without infringing on any copyrights. The gameplay style and mechanics are very similar to classic Doom, involving navigating levels from a first-person perspective and battling demons with a variety of guns.
The project aims to serve as a free stand-in for the proprietary assets in the original DOS Doom games. By pairing the Freedoom game files with the FreeDoom engine, users can play for free what is essentially a copy of Doom without the copyrighted art, sounds, and levels.
Freedoom helps allow Doom source ports and mods to provide a legal free game for download. There are two free “episodes” currently available as well as the ability to convert other assets into data compatible with Freedoom and the FreeDoom engine.
