What is Serious Sam (Series)?

Serious Sam is a series of first-person shooter video games developed by Croatian indie studio Croteam and published by Devolver Digital. The series is known for its chaotic battles against enormous hordes of enemies, often numbering in the thousands, and taking place across large open arenas and landscapes.

The first game in the series, Serious Sam: The First Encounter, was released in 2001 and sees hero Sam "Serious" Stone defending Earth from an extraterrestrial overlord named Mental and his army of beasts and monsters like the Headless Kamikaze, Kleer Skeletons, and Sirian Werebulls. Weapons featured in the game include a shotgun, Tommy gun, rocket launcher and minigun.

This was followed up with Serious Sam: The Second Encounter in 2002, which continues Sam's fight against Mental's forces across more exotic locales. 2004 then saw the release of Serious Sam 2, which introduced vehicular combat elements like hovercrafts and mechanized walkers and took players to new places like Japan, Italy and Russia.

Several Serious Sam games were later released for Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and mobile devices. The HD remakes Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter and Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter came out in 2009 and 2010, featuring updated graphics, online co-op modes and bonus content. The VR-focused Serious Sam games - Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE, Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope and Serious Sam VR: The First Encounter - brought the action to virtual reality. 2021 saw the launch of Serious Sam 4, returning to the series' roots with more outrageous combat arenas.

Across all games, the Serious Sam series is defined by its frenetic, high-octane shooting action as you mow down thousands of foes using a colorful variety of firearms. Emphasis is placed on moving through levels quickly while dodging incoming projectiles fired by the many enemies swarming after you.
