What is Futurepedia?
Futurepedia is a free, open-source wiki software application specialized for building online encyclopedias of speculative and imagined futures. It allows communities of science fiction fans, writers, researchers, and more to collaboratively create, edit, and share canonical guides to fictional universes, imagined technologies, alternate histories, and more.
Like general purpose wiki software such as MediaWiki, Futurepedia provides an intuitive what-you-see-is-what-you-get editing interface, version history and rollbacks, access controls and permissions, and support for multimedia embedding. It is built using state-of-the-art web technologies.
What sets Futurepedia apart is that it is specially designed for speculative fiction content, with features like:
- Templates for documenting in-universe lore like characters, locations, events, technologies, cultures, languages, and more
- Infoboxes and standardized data fields for canonical factual information
- Citing sources both in- and out-of-universe to substantiate claims
- Tags and categories to enable deep browsing by topic, genre, franchise, etc.
- Special support for documenting alternate histories and timelines
- And more
Futurepedia aims to provide the definitive source of truth on a given fictional world. It can help both fans and content creators track expansive lore while collaborating with others to expand and explore new ideas. And it does so with 100% free, open source software, for speculative fiction by speculative fiction fans.
