Gaikai: Cloud Gaming Service

Gaikai is a cloud gaming service that allows users to play high-end video games through streaming technology without needing to purchase expensive gaming hardware. It provides instant access to games on any device with a browser.

What is Gaikai?

Gaikai is a pioneering cloud gaming service that utilizes streaming technology to deliver high-end video games instantly to a wide range of internet-connected devices. Founded in 2008, Gaikai aims to revolutionize gaming by eliminating the need for expensive consoles and gaming PCs.

The Gaikai service works by running the video games on remote servers in data centers. The video output of the games is then streamed compressed over the internet to the user's device, where it can be displayed in a web browser that supports the required plugins. This allows graphically complex AAA games to be played on simple laptops, tablets, smart TVs and more, without long download times or compatibility issues.

A key advantage of Gaikai over traditional gaming platforms is instant access and portability to play any game on any device, without waiting for downloads or installations. The service can even allow game trials without needing to buy the full game first. However, drawbacks include lag, buffering and reliance on a fast internet connection to maintain good quality.

In July 2012, Gaikai was acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment and incorporated into PlayStation Now game streaming services. This expanded the reach and games library available through cloud gaming technology pioneered by Gaikai.
