What is Google Bookmarks?

Google Bookmarks was a bookmarking service launched by Google in 2005. It allowed users to save, organize, and manage their bookmarks from any browser or device. Some key features of Google Bookmarks included:

  • Syncing of bookmarks across devices so users could access their bookmarks from any computer or mobile device.
  • Social sharing features to share bookmarks with friends.
  • Tagging and organizing bookmarks intofolders for easy searching and access later.
  • Importing bookmarks from other browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.
  • Chrome extension for easy bookmark saving.

Google Bookmarks offered a free online service for bookmark management that competed with other popular bookmarking services at the time like Delicious. It attracted significant user bases in its first couple years. However, in 2011 Google announced it would be closing down Google Bookmarks and focus its efforts on browser-based syncing services instead. Many former Google Bookmarks users migrated to alternatives like Xmarks or Pinboard after its shut down.
