What is IDVD?
iDVD is a DVD authoring software application that was developed by Apple Inc. and included with older versions of macOS. It was designed to allow consumers to easily import video, photo, and music files from their computer and use them to create DVDs that could be played back on standard DVD players connected to televisions.
Some key features of iDVD include:
- Templates and themes - The app came with a variety of pre-made DVD menu templates and themes that users could customize with their own content. This allowed consumers to quickly create professional-looking DVDs without any complexauthoring.
- Drag-and-drop functionality - Users could simply drag their video, photo, and music files into iDVD and drop them into the desired chapter or menu locations.
- Disc burning capabilities - iDVD allowed users to burn their finished DVD projects directly to a blank DVD disc that could be played back immediately in a standard DVD player.
- Slideshow creation - Photo slideshows with custom pan and zoom effects could easily be created and added to DVD menus or chapters.
- OneStep DVD creation - This feature automated the DVD creation process by allowing users to select their media files and have iDVD handle all of the authoring tasks using pre-made templates.
While very user-friendly for basic consumer DVD creation needs, iDVD lacked more advanced features that professional DVD authors required. Apple stopped development on iDVD after macOS 10.8 Mountain Lion in favor of its newer GarageBand and iMovie apps. iDVD is no longer included with or supported by modern versions of macOS.
