Joost: Open Source Peer-to-Peer Streaming App for HD Video

Legal access to user-uploaded content, high-definition video quality, high-fidelity audio, and TV-like navigation for professionally produced content.

What is Joost?

Joost is a peer-to-peer streaming video/TV distribution software focused on providing high-quality video and TV-like navigation for viewing professional content. It was launched in 2007 as a free and legal way to access user-uploaded TV shows, music videos, movies and more.

Some key features of Joost include:

  • Open source platform based on peer-to-peer technology to avoid infrastructure and bandwidth costs
  • High-definition video quality - up to 720p resolution
  • TV-like interface and navigation for a leanback viewing experience
  • Support for accessing and streaming a wide range of multimedia content like TV shows, sports, movies, music videos and more
  • Based on opensource code to enable community contributions
  • Available on Windows, macOS and Linux platforms

While Joost saw significant early traction, it eventually shutdown operations in 2009 due to issues with its peer-to-peer technology infrastructure and competition from sites like Hulu and YouTube. The source code was subsequently released to spur further peer-to-peer streaming innovations by the open source community.
