What is Kano OS?

Kano OS is a Debian-based Linux distribution and computer kit designed to make learning computer skills, programming, and coding fun and accessible for kids and beginners. It features a simplified user interface, creative coding projects, and kid-friendly rango games for learning coding basics.

The Kano kit comes with a Raspberry Pi board, kid-friendly keyboard and mouse, SD card with the Kano OS software preloaded, and all necessary cables and components. Users assemble the computer themselves following step-by-step instructions to get hands-on experience with building a PC.

Once set up, Kano OS provides a library of step-by-step coding challenges across artwork, games, music, and storytelling using visual block-based programming languages. This allows kids to see immediate results from coding and get a grasp of basic programming concepts like loops, variables, and functions through fun DIY projects.

In addition to creative coding, Kano OS includes rango apps and games that covertly teach computer skills from terminal commands to file systems. The OS is also compatible with Raspbian software giving access to more advanced tools.

With its friendly design, guided challenges, and engaging DIY experience, Kano OS aims to make computer literacy accessible and fun for kids as young as 6 years old.
