What is Lunettes?

Lunettes by Optinvent is an open-source augmented reality (AR) headset designed to enhance real-world experiences through digital overlays and information. First unveiled in 2014, Lunettes features transparent lens displays that allow users to view the physical environment around them while also seeing computer-generated graphics, notifications, data readouts, and more.

From a hardware perspective, Lunettes runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor optimized for computer vision workloads. It includes a high-resolution 1080p RGB camera on the front for capturing video and images and tracking hand gestures. Advanced depth sensors and spatial mapping technologies provide detailed surroundings data to enable accurate digital augmentations pinned to real-world coordinates.

On the software side, Lunettes leverages a customized version of Android as its operating system. This allows easy development and porting of Android apps to the AR glasses. An open SDK is provided for programmers and developers to build immersive augmented reality experiences suited for heads-up displays. Popular use cases today span gaming, industrial workflows, remote assistance, navigation, and workplace productivity.

As an open-source AR headset, Lunettes aims to spur innovation in the nascent smart glasses space. Its affordable price point and hackable software platform allows students, researchers, and tech enthusiasts to experiment with augmented reality applications across a wide range of domains and hands-free use cases.
