What is Master of Magic?

Master of Magic is a fantasy turn-based strategy game released in 1994 for MS-DOS. It was developed by Simtex and published by MicroProse.

In the game, players take on the role of a powerful wizard competing against rival wizards across several planes of existence linked together as the world of Arcanus. As a wizard, the player manages cities across different planes to gain resources, researches new spells, recruits fantastic armies, and battles against rival wizards and their forces.

Gameplay takes place on an overworld map as well as tactical battle screens. On the overworld, players spend magic points to cast global enchantments, move their armies, and manage their empires. When armies meet in combat, the game shifts to a tactical battle screen where units can maneuver and attack using their own unique abilities.

As the game progresses, wizards can research new schools of magic and recruit new types of fantastic creatures and heroes for their armies. The wizard who eliminates or subjugates all rivals across the planes of Arcanus wins the game.

Master of Magic was praised for its engaging blend of city-building, empire management, and tactical combat. Its detailed magic system and array of units and spells provides significant depth and replay value even decades after its initial release.
