What is Monument Valley?
Monument Valley is an ingenious, award-winning puzzle game developed and published by Ustwo Games in 2014. Often compared to M.C. Escher paintings, it features impossible architecture set in a silent, surreal world.
In the game, you guide the quiet princess Ida through mysterious monuments by tapping on paths and manipulating the architecture to find hidden routes. The levels involve optical illusions, gaps in geometry, secret passages, and surprising transitions as you guide Ida from one location to another.
With its minimalist, almost poetic aesthetic and clever puzzles based on impossible objects, Monument Valley delivers an intensely atmospheric experience described by critics as both peaceful and melancholy. The game subverts expectations and requires creative, outside-the-box thinking to traverse the arcane monuments.
Lauded for its design and artistic beauty, Monument Valley won Apple’s Game of the Year award in 2014 as well as the Apple Design Award in the same year. An expansion pack called Monument Valley: Forgotten Shores was later released in 2014. A sequel called Monument Valley 2 launched in 2017.
