What is OpenCyc?

OpenCyc is an open source artificial intelligence project that aims to assemble a comprehensive ontology and knowledge base containing hundreds of thousands of everyday commonsense facts about the world. The knowledge is represented in a logic-based language that enables advanced inference and reasoning.

The project was started in 1984 by Cycorp to develop a foundation of basic knowledge and reasoning that could enable advanced, human-like artificial intelligence. In 2001, Cycorp released OpenCyc under an open source license to encourage further research and development.

The OpenCyc knowledge base contains information about things like:

• Basic concepts and entities like time, space, matter, organisms, beliefs, and intentions
• Events and activities like eating, walking, agreements, payments, travel
• Roles and relationships between entities
• Rules about how the world works physically, socially, and mentally

The structured representation of knowledge in OpenCyc enables software applications to perform logical inference and reasoning similar to how humans draw conclusions about the world. It can make recommendations, answer questions, and solve problems based on existing knowledge. OpenCyc aims to provide a foundation for artificial general intelligence.
