What is PlantSnap?

PlantSnap is a mobile application available for iOS and Android devices that allows users to identify plants and flowers simply by taking a photo. The app has an extensive database of over 680,000 known species of plants, trees, mushrooms, cacti and succulents that it uses to match the photo and provide identification results.

Once the user takes or uploads a picture of a plant, the app analyzes the image using visual recognition technology and machine learning to identify key visual features and patterns in the leaves, flowers, bark, etc. It then matches those inputs to the entries in its database to find potential matches and rankings. The higher the ranking, the more likely it is a positive identification.

In addition to providing possible identifications for the plant, PlantSnap also shows supplemental information pulled from its database about each matched plant species, including common names, scientific names, plant family, key characteristics, native regions, edibility, medicinal uses, and more. Links are also provided to external sites for further research.

The app allows users to save identified plants to collections and get notifications when they are spotted again in the future. Users can also submit unidentified plants to the PlantSnap community to get help identifying mysterious species. An optional subscription unlocks additional features like offline access and data exports.
