What is PS3 Media Server?
PS3 Media Server is a free open source cross-platform media streaming application developed by the PS3 Media Server team. It was originally called PS3 Media Server since its main function was to stream media files to a Playstation 3. But it now has support for streaming to many other devices such as Xbox 360, Playstation 4, Android devices, Smart TVs, media streamers and other DLNA or UPnP compliant devices.
It works by transcoding media on-the-fly to ensure compatibility with the target device. This means the original media file is dynamically converted to a format the device can handle while maintaining as much quality as possible. PS3 Media Server has built-in support for transcoding many popular video, audio, and image formats to formats the device can play. It also has subtitle support for media that contains subtitles.
