What is RARLAB UnRAR?

RARLAB UnRAR is a free and open-source utility for unpacking RAR archives on Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems. It fully supports all compression methods and features of the RAR format, including unpacking multi-volume archives, archives with recovery records, and encrypted archives.

UnRAR was originally developed in 1995 as a console application for MS-DOS. Over the years it was ported to other platforms and gradually enhanced with a GUI and additional features. The latest versions are maintained by RARLAB, the technology company founded by Eugene Roshal, the original developer of the RAR file format.

As an open-source unpacker tool, UnRAR decompresses RAR archives created with any RAR implementation. It can unpack all versions of the format from 1.50 to 5.0. UnRAR releases follow the same version numbering as the RAR standard itself. The utility has a command line interface for integration into scripts or automation workflows. It also has basic file extraction capabilities through its graphical user interface.

UnRAR is included with most Linux distributions and is available for download on Windows and Mac systems. The source code is published under the GNU General Public License. Contributors have ported the original code to many processor architectures over the years. The utility is widely used as a light, fast and effective tool for RAR extraction.
