Shadowrun Returns is a series of turn-based tactical role-playing video games developed by Harebrained Schemes and set in the fictional Shadowrun universe. The setting mixes science fiction and fantasy and is considered cyberpunk. The games take place in a near-future where magic has re-awakened, allowing humans to become magicians, elves, dwarves, orks, and trolls to exist alongside cyborgs, hackers, and megacorporations.
The first game in the series, simply titled Shadowrun Returns, was released in 2013 after a successful Kickstarter campaign. It features a single-player campaign set in Seattle as well as a level editor to allow users to create their own scenarios. The next game, Shadowrun: Dragonfall (2014), moves the setting to the anarchic state of Berlin in the Flux State. It refines the mechanics of the first game and features a longer, more complex plot. Shadowrun: Hong Kong followed in 2015 with the player travelling to Hong Kong to unravel a mysterious death.
Key features of the Shadowrun Returns series include turn-based tactical combat emphasizing cover and maneuvering; skill checks during dialogue sequences impacted by player character attributes and equipment; hacking mini-games to infiltrate computer systems; and freeform character progression where skills and abilities are unlocked by karma earned through missions. There is also robust mod support through the level editor and Steam Workshop.
