Sonic The Hedgehog is a classic 2D side-scrolling platform video game originally developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis console in 1991. It starred Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega's new mascot character, who could run at superspeed through levels to collect rings and defeat enemies.
In the game, the evil scientist Dr. Ivo Robotnik has trapped animals inside robots and turned them into his minions. Sonic must race through intricately designed levels across the South Island to defeat Dr. Robotnik, smash his robot generators, and rescue his animal friends. Along the way, Sonic collects golden rings both as a form of health and as a way to access special stages.
With its bright, colorful graphics, fast-paced gameplay focused on Sonic's speed and momentum, catchy music tracks, and reliance on simple but responsive controls, Sonic The Hedgehog became extremely popular.
