What is SpellSmash?

SpellSmash is an engaging educational word video game designed to help children ages 8-14 improve their English language spelling and vocabulary skills. Players smash words on their screen by correctly typing the letters they hear. With over 5,000 words across dozens of themed levels, SpellSmash combines the excitement of a fast-paced arcade-style game with practical spelling and phonics practice.

As a single player game, children choose their avatar and difficulty level before entering the first level. Each level features a different background theme like outer space, under the sea, or in the clouds. Words appropriate to each theme slowly float down the screen and a voice speaks the word. To smash the word and earn points, players must quickly type the correct spelling before the word reaches the bottom. For every correctly smashed word, players earn coins to unlock new avatars, backgrounds, power-ups and badges. Power-ups give advantages like extra time, hints, or coin multipliers.

With multiple difficulty settings, SpellSmash adapts to each child's spelling ability. Easier levels focus on 3-4 letter words and the hardest levels feature longer words with more complex phonics. Fun sound effects and animations reward correct answers and encourage progression to higher levels. Detailed post-game feedback shows overall accuracy percentage, longest word spelled, and other stats to help track learning over time.
