What is Swfdec?
Swfdec is an open-source Flash player and browser plugin for Linux, FreeBSD and other Unix-like operating systems. It allows users to view SWF files and websites containing Flash multimedia content without needing the proprietary Adobe Flash Player.
Swfdec supports many common Flash features including ActionScript 2 & 3, vectors, bitmaps, shapes, sounds, videos, text, fonts and more. It uses the GNOME multimedia framework GStreamer for audio and video playback. Swfdec also provides a Flash browser plugin compatible with Firefox, Chrome and other browsers.
As open-source software licensed under the LGPL, Swfdec aims to provide an alternative to Adobe's closed-source Flash Player. However it relies on reverse-engineering so may not be fully compatible with all Flash content, especially newer SWF versions. Websites relying on newer Flash features may not function properly.
