The King of Fighters is a long-running fighting game franchise developed and published by Japanese company SNK. First launched in arcades in 1994, The King of Fighters brings together characters from other popular SNK games like Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Ikari Warriors and Psycho Soldier to compete in team-based fighting tournaments.

Centered around the titular King of Fighters fighting tournament, the games feature teams of 3 characters fighting against other teams in one-on-one combat. Players can string together combos and special moves to knock out opposing team members. When one fighter loses, the next teammate jumps in to continue the fight.

The original King of Fighters 1994 featured characters like Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi, Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia. Later games added more world warriors like Mai Shiranui, Kim Kaphwan, Chang Koehan and Choi Bounge. Popular bosses include Geese Howard, Rugal Bernstein, and Goenitz.

The King of Fighters series pioneered the team-based fighting concept and adds new characters, stories and gameplay ideas with each yearly release. Over the past 25+ years and 15 mainline titles, The King of Fighters has become one of SNK's most iconic fighting game franchises.
