Play as a hospital administrator in this classic business simulation game, where you design and manage a hospital to cure patients of comical ailments.
Theme Hospital is a business simulation video game developed by Bullfrog Productions and published by Electronic Arts in 1997. In the game, players design and operate a hospital with the goal of curing patients of fictional comical ailments such as Bloaty Head, King Complex, or alien DNA. Gameplay is open-ended and non-linear - players are free to expand their hospital however they see fit, with the goal being to cure as many patients as possible to generate cash and reputation.
Players start on an empty plot of land and must construct rooms such as general diagnosis areas, operating theatres, psychiatry rooms, lavatories and other specialized medical units in order to diagnose and treat patients. Staff members like doctors, nurses and researchers must also be hired. Curing patients generates income, allowing players to expand the hospital while curing more people. Players can choose to focus on training medical staff, researching new illnesses or expanding into marketing campaigns to attract more patients.
Theme Hospital received critical acclaim upon release and is considered influential in the simulation video game genre. The combination of lighthearted humor with strategic depth was praised, though some critics felt the visuals and gameplay were too similar to earlier Bullfrog titles. It was a commercial success as well, selling over 4 million copies. An open source remake called CorsixTH as well as two spiritual successors called Two Point Hospital and Project Hospital have been released in subsequent years.
