What is TOPCAT?
TOPCAT is an interactive graphical tool for manipulation and analysis of tabular data, such as astronomical catalogs or spreadsheet tables. It was developed specifically for use in astronomical research to handle the ever larger catalogs produced by current and next generation sky surveys.
TOPCAT provides a wide range of functionality for table operations, including:
Fast and efficient rendering of large tables
Sorting and filtering of rows and columns
Visualization using a variety of plots, histograms and graphs
Joining of multiple tables based on matching columns
Advanced server-side crossmatching between very large tables
Access to Virtual Observatory, ESAC and other remote services
Various statistical analysis functions
Data annotation and modification
Scriptable from both Python and the command line
On the whole TOPCAT aims to provide most common analysis and manipulation operations expected from a spreadsheet, but focused on tabular data rather than single records. It is optimized for performance and usability dealing with large datasets. The tight integration of analysis and visualization tools on the desktop allows flexible control as well as rapid investigation and exploration.
TOPCAT is written in Java using the JEL library and runs on all common operating systems. Originally developed for UNIX at the University of Bristol, it is now open source and further developed by a small international collaboration.
