Single-player fantasy role-playing video game with rich storytelling and complex character development, released in 2017 by inXile Entertainment.
Torment: Tides of Numenera is a fantasy role-playing video game developed by inXile Entertainment and released in February 2017. It is considered a spiritual successor to the critically-acclaimed 1999 RPG Planescape: Torment, which was praised for its exceptionally deep and personal storytelling.
Torment: Tides of Numenera takes place in the fantasy world of Numenera, a world a billion years in the future. Civilizations have risen and fallen countless times, leaving behind advanced technology and artifacts. The game focuses heavily on narrative and gives the player control of the “Last Castoff,” a human host that was once inhabited by a powerful being but then abandoned. Much of the game revolves around exploring the life of your former inhabitant and uncovering lost secrets and histories.
Gameplay consists mainly of standard RPG mechanics like turn-based combat, skill checks, character statistics, and moral alignments. However, the emphasis is on interacting with characters and environments to progress the personal story of the Last Castoff rather than using combat to defeat enemies. There are also unique “Tides” alignments that determine how other characters respond to you based on your words and actions.
Upon release, Torment: Tides of Numenera received generally positive reviews, with praise focused on the well-written narrative and setting. Criticisms included uneven pacing, technical issues, and combat considered mediocre by RPG standards. However, it is considered a worthy thematic successor to Planescape: Torment in providing an extremely text-heavy, story-focused RPG experience.
