What is Path of Exile?
Path of Exile is a free-to-play online action role-playing video game developed and published by Grinding Gear Games. It was originally released for Microsoft Windows in October 2013, before being ported to Xbox One in August 2017, PlayStation 4 in March 2019, and macOS in January 2023.
Path of Exile is set in a dark fantasy world called Wraeclast. Players choose from seven character classes - Marauder, Ranger, Witch, Duelist, Templar, Shadow and Scion - each with their own strengths, weaknesses and abilities that are modified through skill gems. As players explore the continent of Wraeclast, they encounter NPCs, items, quests and varying environments.
Key features of Path of Exile include:
- Extensive skill tree with over 1300 skill nodes allowing for a high degree of character customization
- Unique item system with extremely rare pieces that significantly enhance a character's power
- Randomized level generation with areas that change each time they are accessed
- PvP (Player vs Player) modes for competitive multiplayer
- Temporary challenge leagues that offer prizes and introduce new gameplay modifiers
- Completely free to play with ethical microtransactions that don't provide gameplay advantages
With frequent expansions adding new content and mechanics, Path of Exile has developed a devoted player base. It is often praised for its complex gameplay systems, dark atmosphere and frequent updates.
