Explore an immersive world, battle through waves of enemies, and master hand-to-hand melee combat with skills and spells in this third-person hack-and-slash action RPG.
Realms of Ancient War is an action role-playing hack and slash video game developed by Wanderlands and published by 505 Games. It was released in October 2012 on Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.
In Realms of Ancient War, the player takes control of one of three heroes: Eirick the Elven Barbarian, Brenna the Valkyr Huntress or Roggon the Dwarven Technomancer. The heroes are trapped in a dream realm filled with demons, undead and mythical monsters. They must battle through waves of these enemies, with the goal of defeating an evil leader.
Gameplay consists of classic hack and slash combat viewed from an isometric perspective. Players can attack enemies with melee weapons like swords as well as using magical skills and spells. Each hero has their own unique playstyle - Eirick relies on brute strength and swordplay, Brenna uses quick agility with her bow, while Roggon uses technology and magic spells to battle foes.
As players progress, they collect loot and gain experience to level up their hero and make them more powerful. Added RPG elements like upgrading skills, improving weapons and armor, and gaining passive buffs give character customization options. Stages are built as large open arenas with destructible objects and arcane traps to provide dynamic environments.
By killing enemies and completing challenges and missions, the player gains wrath points which help summon spirit allies that aid the heroes. These allies include the warrior Mordreck, powerful priestess Inga and huntress Freja, who have their own special skills to use against enemies.
Realms of Ancient War received mixed to positive reviews. Critics praised its simple hack and slash gameplay, detailed graphics and cooperative multiplayer mode. Complaints focused on a lack of depth with limited roleplaying elements and repetitiveness setting in over the course of the game.
