Diablo (Series)
Diablo: Dark Fantasy Action
Explore a dark fantasy world, battle the forces of hell, and master epic action in Diablo, a classic hack and slash video game series developed by Blizzard Entertainment.
What is Diablo (Series)?
The Diablo series is a series of action role-playing hack and slash dungeon crawler video games developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Set in the dark fantasy world of Sanctuary, the series follows the endless conflict between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells over the fate of humanity.
The first game in the series, Diablo, was released for PC in 1996. Players choose between one of three character classes - Warrior, Rogue or Sorcerer. Taking place beneath the fictional town of Tristram, the goal is to battle down through 16 randomly generated dungeon levels to defeat the titular Lord of Terror, Diablo. Known for its dark atmosphere, loot grinding gameplay and multiplayer support, Diablo was massively successful and laid the foundations for the series.
The second entry, Diablo II, built on the original's gameplay with five playable character classes and greatly expanded the world and lore of the Diablo universe. Released in 2000, it introduced many series staples like gems, runes and charms. Critically acclaimed and a massive commercial hit, it is considered one of the greatest video games ever made.
After more than a decade, Diablo III was finally released in 2012 with updated graphics, mechanics and loot systems. It originally required an internet connection to play due to its auction houses, drawing controversy and mixed early reviews, but its first expansion Reaper of Souls addressed many complaints and is seen as one of the best ARPG releases. Diablo III broke sales records and continues to receive new seasonal content updates.
As a whole, the Diablo series emphasizes dark gothic settings, RPG mechanics and addictive loot grinding gameplay centered around randomly generated environments. Its lasting influence on the action RPG genre is undeniable, with many games borrowing gameplay elements established in Diablo.
